Darley Dale Station Planters - EMR Community Fund

October 2025

On Thursday 9th October 2025, four volunteers from the Trust plus one additional volunteer began to plant up new self-watering planters purchased from a £1000 grant from EMR's Community Fund, with support from a private donation and DWVRT funds. In addition the opportunity was also taken to weed and replant the remaining wooden planters at the station with winter pansies and various bulbs.

200 daffodil bulbs have been donated by Darley Dale in Bloom which were added to the tete a tete daffodil bulbs already purchased. Assorted thujas have been added to the very realistic half barrels on the Down platform, and junipers added to the large barrels outside the Up platform building. During the hot summer, all the conifers and plants died and the old wooden barrels had collapsed. The platforms now look much more presentable and in the spring, when rock roses become available again, they will be added to the self-watering planters.

The work built on the contributions made recently by volunteers from ALSTOM who spent a day at the station. One of their many contributions was setting out and filling the new planters with wheelbarrow loads of compost and soil.

he Derwent and Wye Valley Railway Trust is very grateful to the East Midlands Railway Community Fund for supporting this work with their generous grant, and to the private donors.
